Gratefulness
I am not sure if it's just me but I think this year has skipped past pretty quickly. It seemed like a few days ago when we were standing in awe of the fireworks as thunderous shouts of "happy new year" heralded 2023. That was twelve brief months ago and now we are starting to look forward to the next set of pyrotechnics to light up the night sky. As we look forward to starting the next trip round the sun, this would be the appropriate time to look back over the year and count the blessings - big and small.
The outgoing year has meant different things for different people. For some, the year could not have gone better than it did. Many people's prayers were answered and many other people enjoyed some grace and favours that they have never before enjoyed. For some, it would have been better the year had not happened at all. They started the year better than they are going to end it and are wishing they can just have a do-over, maybe they can get things right a second time. The rest have just passed through the year without anything to be happy or be sad about.
It is an opportunity to reflect on the passing year and plan better for the next. Part of the recipe for future success is to go over previous performances and do an evaluation. It will not be out of place to be wishing for a better finish to the year, for we as humans are built to aspire for greater things. It will not be out of place either to be thoroughly satisfied with the current situation, for there is also a sense of fulfilment that comes when some landmarks are reached. What will be out of place is a total lack of gratitude just because the year is not ending the way you think it should have.
It may not have panned as planned but there is always something to be thankful for. Whatever category you may find yourself in, nothing beats an understanding of your unique opportunities and gratitude for being alive to witness another moment as this. Whether it’s been a great year or an extremely difficult one, the life you have is a gift and that in itself is something to be grateful for.
So, as you’re gathering together with family and loved ones, rushing to parties, or cooking an absurd amount of food, don’t get caught up in the obligations and the busyness of the season and miss the reason behind it all. Remember this is our opportunity to end the year with gratitude for all the things we have been through. Next year presents yet another opportunity to get a better year than 2023 has been.
Have a wonderful holiday, and see you in 2024.
